This drum lesson breaks down the Afro Cuban groove: The Songo. Songo music is derived from the clave' which is the mother rhythm of all Afro Cuban. This is a bare-bones breakdown of the simple technique for playing the Songo. It does not explore the feel of the groove... the notation and how to execute it on its mose basic level. More on the Songo Groove. This is a very cool Afro-Cuban drum set groove... "Songo represented a major breakthrough in Latin music by introducing the drumset into the standard percussion triumvirate of congas, timbales, and bongos ... the Songo rhythm finally put the drumset on equal footing with the other instruments.” (Funkifying The Clave' by Goines and Ameen 1990) It was first created by José Luis Quintana... but has evolved over the decades and is used by a ton of American drummers like Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Steve Gadd... to name a few.
This video teaches the most basic version of the drumset groove, which is a little watered down from the original drum groove developed by José Luis Quintana "Changuito" in the 1970s.
Let me know in the comments if you'd like me to do a more advanced lesson on the original and more authentic version of this popular Afro-Cuban drum groove.
