Bill Bonanno: The Legacy of Joe Bonanno's Son
From Brooklyn to Arizona: The Life of Salvatore "Bill" Bonanno
Bill Bonanno: Consigliere, Peacemaker, and the End of an Era
In this episode of Real Mob Stories with James Proctor, we explore the life of Salvatore Vincent Bonanno, also known as Bill Bonanno. Born in 1932 in Brooklyn, Bill was the son of Joe Bonanno, the powerful boss of the Bonanno crime family. At the age of six, Bill moved with his family to Long Island, but due to his severe allergies, he was sent to a Catholic boarding school in Tucson, Arizona. After graduating high school, Bill attended the University of Arizona. Following his college education, Bill returned to New York and was inducted into the Bonanno crime family around 1955. In 1956, Bill Bonanno married Rosalie Profaci, the niece of Joe Profaci, at a grand wedding that solidified ties between the Bonanno and Profaci families. Bill mostly stayed close to his father, learning from him and eventually becoming the Consigliere of the Bonanno family. However, his lack of street experience led to a lack of respect from the rank-and-file soldiers. Bill was firmly against the family's involvement in narcotics. In 1963, when Joe Bonanno attempted to take over the Commission, it led to the infamous Banana Wars, with the Commission appointing Gaspar DiGregorio as boss. By 1968, a peace agreement was reached, and Bill Bonanno was allowed to resign as Consigliere. Both he and his father then moved to Arizona.
Bill Bonanno lived out the remainder of his life in Arizona, passing away in 2008 at the age of 75. Join us as we delve into the life of Bill Bonanno, exploring his role in the Bonanno crime family, his opposition to narcotics, and his eventual move to a peaceful life in Arizona.
