Seismic surface waves can be used to make geologic observations of the subsurface from the top meter down to kilometers below ground. A common application of surface waves is to use them to create shear wave velocity models for the top 30 meters of the subsurface (VS30) which is used in foundation and structural engineering. The 1D active MASW method is a popular an accurate method for generating VS30 models.
This first video of our three part 1D active MASW covers the physics of surface waves and the different seismic applications (SASW, MASW, REMI, MAM) that utilize them for subsurface shear wave interpretations.
