The first of the Medium-Heavy Operational Vehicles (MHOV) have arrived at Burnham Military Camp. The MHOVs provide the NZDF with a range of medium and heavy military vehicles that are appropriate to meet current and future challenges in operational environments.
The MHOVs can be fitted with armour sets, ring mounts and flat racks. They also have modern computerised systems and are fitted with high-capacity electrical systems.
The vehicles have far greater capacity than our current fleet, with a range of variants being purchased including 6 tonne, 9 tonne and 15 tonne vehicles.
They have a far greater mobility and cross country capability than the current fleet. All the engines are emissions compliant and allow for efficient operations even if the fuel is of lower quality, as is the case in some military operations overseas. An extensive engine bench testing was run to qualify and prove these components and provide greater interoperability on operations.
Engine diagnostic systems will be provided with the new MHOV, allowing greater certainty around identifying and fixing faults within the MHOV engine and systems.
More than 80 per cent of the MHOV's components are also used by civilian MAN vehicles, which mean maintenance support will be more readily available for these vehicles.
