VERY LONG, VERY BORING
Sorry! You're poor, poor souls to have to suffer this. There's some useful info buried in the morass. This video is tilted often times because that’s how I see the world post-TIA
This is all very boring talk and if you want, skip the whole tilted thing! It’s my first attempt to work behind a camera – and it shows. Lol. Street-level ham radio? Another description might be ‘gutter level’ perhaps? Hey! How about 'desperation radio' :)
I wanted to talk about mainly 3 things, and they will be common to any UNUN or BALUN that you wind: First, the current flowing in the wire- and thus, wire gauge. Another, the voltages present and thus insulation type. Voltages that like to bolt through wire insulation and arc to ground (or you). The voltages that want to roast your fingers and hands. Don’t think you’re grounded? Sure you are. To RF and very high voltages you are – grounded through your capacitive coupling to the universe. And I want to talk a a little about core power handling capability – at least as I have found it to be while using my UNUN autotransformers.. particularly these FT140-43 (single and double) and FT120-43 cores I’ve been screwing with lately. My old FT240-43 core is but a distant memory. Isn’t it, Art? It never got even close to getting warm to the touch with my meager station. Just wait though :)
Part 2 will have MUCH less talk. One look at another spreadsheet though.. but it will be quick and painless. I need it to show why I insist on 3-turn primaries rather than the common 2. I’ll then show a piece of garbage-picked trash paper upon which I’ll print the number of turns I’ll be using. It will show # of turns and the Z ratio for each. I’m hoping to keep that video short and to the point. And I’m damned sure not going to stop the phone once it’s going. If I hit the ‘stop square’ instead of the ‘pause bars’… I’ll… heck, I’ll blame it on the dog. Oh wait.. I don’t have one yet. So I must record it in one shot lest I transcode for another two days. I’m just not that smart, you see…. :)
