Kansas City Art Institute Student Housing: Barbara Marshall Residence Hall
Enterprise Precast Concrete produced the precast concrete for the Kansas City Art Institute student housing project, which is a four-story, 227-bed student residence building with a one-story adjacent dining center. The project is centered around an initiative focused on attracting and retaining top level freshman art students. Architecturally, it represents a transformational, iconic new building that compliments history and tradition while expressing its forward-thinking evolution.
Tapered windows that utilize pops of color achieved with a field applied stain are a key design element. This design feature, when combined with the multi-finish precast exterior, creates a striking visual presence on the campus.
For the interior, an 'honesty of materials' theme prevails. The interior wythe of concrete is left exposed with a sandblast finish. The exposed sand blast finish is seen in the corridor, study alcoves, gym room as well as the interior walls of the individual dorm rooms.
In some areas, interior integral color precast panels continue to the exterior creating an unmistakable and attractive connection between the two. That connection between the exterior and the interior is best illustrated in the back wall panel of the grand stand and its tiered seating area.
In 2020 this project received both an ‘honor award’ and the top ‘project of the year’ designation by the AIA Kansas City chapter at their annual design awards ceremony.
