As more and more rivalries are torn apart by college football realignment, no conference looks to be the posterchild for this more than the Big 12. With such games as Colorado/Nebraska, Bedlam, and Texas Tech/Texas now things of the past as teams have switched conferences, the Big 12 is now left with really only four marquee rivalries. They think so, too, as they've only preserved those four rivalries as games to be played every year in their new scheduling format.
But there's a small possibility a new rivalry may form before our very eyes. While the Space Race between Houston and UCF never seemed to get liftoff, and Farmageddon, despite being a legitimate rivalry between K-State and Iowa State, doesn't seem to have the conference's respect, the losses of Texas and Oklahoma may have just opened the possibilities of a new rivalry forming before our very eyes: the Dust Bowl, between the Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
Now, this game doesn't carry the spark of rivalry yet. But over time, it very well could become one of the Big 12's most vibrant rivalries. Let's take a look at some reasons as to why that could be, including a short history of the two teams, why there's beef in the first place, and why it could grow. In the end, it's just speculation on my part. But rivalries are what make college sports fun, and more of them means more fun for everyone involved. So put your guns up or keep those pistols firing, and let's take a look into a game that might be the Big 12's newest rivalry, if we give it time: the Dust Bowl.
