How can you treat an infected tooth socket after a tooth extraction? There are several ways. So the question is: how can you treat and infect it to the socket after the extraction?
If you would see straight forward dental extraction, you don't have any reason for the tooth to get infected, for example in our surgical office, and this is what we do for a living we extract teeth pretty much all day along. The chances of any type of tooth infection or infections to occur after a tooth extraction is very minimum in our office.
If it does happen, then there are ways to treat that. One of the ways we normally do to prevent any type of infection, we follow some antibiotic protocols and we also follow some sterile surgical protocols, so that way it's all clean and there is no infection from the type of procedure that is happening. Then God forbid something happens, and if you end up getting an infection, then you are going to have either some kind of what we call it as an irrigation. So we irrigate the socket with some mouthwash or a special antibiotic mouthwash, and we also give you antibiotic mouthwash for you to use it at home and then also we may put some medicamen dressing inside the socket to handle the infection, or sometimes they're rarely depending on the severity of the infection, if you get, for example, like a severe infection in terms of a dental abscess, we may have to go and even drain some of the infection.
So the answer is you either prevent it or you make sure that it does not happen or if it does happen, depending on the type of infection, depending on the severity, you will be able to take care of it and for the most part, even if you do have any infection happen, the mother nature will take care of it. It will take its own course of action and the next few days to like about a week or 10 days. Everything should be back.
