Practically unknown in the public conscience before 2014, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), also sometimes ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) or Daesh, had been a leading insurgent group in Iraq since its foundation in 1999 by Abu Musab al-Zarqani meant to fight against the country's Shia minority in the hope of creating a sectarian conflict that would unite Sunni Muslims against a common enemy. Following the 2003 US-led Invasion of Iraq, coalition forces became a key target for the group. After a deadly bombing campaign in the second half of the 2000s, the US cracked down and al-Zarqani was killed with most of the group's leadership also being nullified. However, under the leadership of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi the group slowly regained strength and was able to capitalise on the Syrian Civil War from 2011 by creating the Al-Nusra Front to further its aims in the neighbouring state.
