Obligate Aerobes
*Oxygen is required in order for obligate areobes to live.
Facultative Anaerobes
*These bacteria can grow in the presence of oxygen and in the absence of oxygen.
*In the absence of oxygen, fermentation and anaerobic respiration occur. Energy production decreases. Instead of oxygen being the electron acceptor there are others, such as nitrate, sulfate, and carbonate. Examples of facultative anaerobes are Escherichia coli and yeasts.
