Toronto Mayor John Tory announced on Wednesday that the city is partnering with Ritual, a food ordering and mobile pickup startup, to launch the Ritual ONE program to support food services.
The program will support food services such as restaurants, grocers, butchers, bakeries and coffee shops to easily accept digital orders from their websites and social media accounts.
Tory said the partnership is part of the city's short-term economic support and recovery plan for Toronto, adding that businesses which sign up before June 1 will receive the service free for life.
The mayor also said that the city is anticipating that restaurants and bars will need more space as they reopen in the post COVID-19 world, and that city staff is looking into a plan to expand patio space on appropriate sidewalks and streets.
Tory said he was "very encouraged" by Ontario Premier Doug Ford's comments on Wednesday when he acknowledged that the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and municipalities are going to need the province’s support and said that “the province is going to be there” to help.
Tory said he agrees with Ford and he also believes the provincial government can't help alone and the federal government has to be there to help, too.
A meeting of the TTC commission on Wednesday laid out the coming challenges when the city restarts and more people go back to work and will have to rely on transit again.
The mayor said the situation will mean there will be less leeway in the transit system to allow people to keep their distance from each other, and clear instructions will be provided to transit riders as quickly as possible after discussions with public health officials.
