Located within Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, the fabled “Garden of Eden” offers a refreshing reward for hiking the 1.6 miles from the side of Highway 9. Located a couple of miles south of the park’s main entrance in Felton, and hidden in plain sight, the Ox trail is clearly marked with a State Parks sign; just look for the jumble of parked cars along the roadway. After a steep downhill, the trail is relatively flat and follows the San Lorenzo River and the Santa Cruz Big Trees and Pacific Railway tracks beneath redwoods, alders, and big leaf maples, a treat in itself. Pick your way down to the rapids over roots and rocks well worn by generations of pleasure seekers. Discovering the irresistible beaches and pools of clear running water framed by boulders ready for sunbathing is a Biblical experience.
The area is popular, so expect a good crowd during peak hours. As with any natural space, take a minute to look out for one another and pack out what you packed in. No dogs, alcohol, or fires, and there are no restroom facilities.
