That Kind of Summer is part of the Official Competition section of Berlinale 2022.
Three hypersexual women spend days in a quiet house by the lake: Léonie (sober), Eugénie (impulsive) and Gaëlle aka Geisha (flirtatious). They are here voluntarily, supervised by a social worker and in loose supervision by a therapist. The motto is: Hypersexuality is not a disease. The experiment is not aimed at healing, but enables the open exploration and reflection of desire experiences, forms and abysses. This takes place half naked and clothed, verbal and physical, imaginary and real. The fact that the project staff is affected, if not affected, is hardly surprising and coincides with the situation of the viewers. Like no other player in contemporary cinema, Denis Côté succeeds in creating dynamic cinematic spaces (sets, settings, constellations) in which experiences (psychological, physical, intellectual) can be regarded as a game and are just on the trail of the real. Sometimes discreetly at a distance, then close across borders, the camera dances around the actors of this cycle of trauma and lust. The norm is deconstructed, the present is felt, the future is conceivable. The cinema is vibration.
