The deepening rift between the US and China is forcing Asian nations to make tough choices, as the world slips further into a contest between radically different visions of the world order — with Xi Jinping alongside Vladimir Putin pushing to upend the global system. The host of the Shangri-la Dialogue in Singapore, Bastian Giegerich, told DW’s Richard Walker that regional powers are having to decide whether to align with Washington or Beijing in a contest “that’s encompassing all areas.” And he addressed growing fears that Asia could be the next region to face a major geopolitically driven war. Giegerich warns that a conflict triggered by accident is the greatest worry — stressing the importance of the US and China building up communication channels to prevent the worst from happening.
