Alexanderplatz has always been one of the liveliest places in Berlin, with shops, cinemas, restaurants, and many attractions within walking distance. It is one of the best known public squares in Berlin Mitte, and it’s certainly the largest of Germany. Named after Tsar Alexander I, who visited the Prussian capital in 1805, most people simply call it Alex. It also has many great tourist attractions in close proximity, making it the ideal starting point for a sightseeing tour of Berlin. Up to the 1850s, it was a military parade and exercise ground, as well as a place where local farmers sold their produce. It became a major transport junction when the railway station opened in 1882. The construction of the central market hall in 1886 and the Tietz department store between 1904 and 1911 made the square the city’s main shopping centre. Alexanderplatz is also popular as a filming location. Many scenes of the series Babylon Berlin are set at the square. Berlin is the capital and largest city of Germany by both area and population. Its 3.7 million inhabitants make it the European Union's most populous city. Turn on the closed captions (CC) to see subtitles with background information about the city & the area.
