Through the Resilient Fisheries and Livestock Value Chain for Inclusive and Sustainable growth in Somalia funded by the European Union, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and Captain Andy's Boat Fabrication Company supported the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources of Jubaland to revitalize the fisheries sector.
FAO supported ministry staff with intensive training on boat commissioning, handling, skipping and maintenance. The training was conducted on 28 to 30 March 2023 at Kismayo Port in Somalia.
The boat – equipped with a VHF radio, radar, marine navigation system and safety gear – is handed over to the ministry of fisheries. The boat helps improve the delivery of extension services to bolster the fisheries sector. Rebuilding and diversifying the fishery sector in Somalia is crucial to regenerating employment in the sector and strengthening food security and nutrition among the Somali.
