This 52 minute documentary covers the history of the cameleers, who came to Australia circa 1866, from various parts of the sub-continent, including Afghanistan and Pakistan, (they were Sindhi, Balooch, Pathan, Sikhs, Punjabis and others). They suffered through many hardships in an alien land but through it all made a significant contribution to the building of this nation. The centrepiece of the documentary is the "Battle of Broken Hill", which is an intriguing episode in Australia's history, when on New Year's Day 1915, two former cameleers (from the Ghilzai tribe) decided to fire upon a picnic train, killing four people. Not enough is known about their motives and various theories exist. Please note, they were not "Turks" as the newspapers initially reported. They were two out of work cameleers, one was an ice cream vendor and the other a mullah who earned money as a halal butcher (based in the Ghan camp outside of the main town of Broken Hill).
