On 3/30/23, the next Voter Services Educational Online Forum was held. It was entitled "Understanding Open vs Closed Primaries", and we heard about Alabama's current "open" primary elections and what it could mean to voters if legislation is enacted to "close" the primary elections in Alabama.
The Moderator Bryan Lorge provided information about the Alabama Election Laws that define how Primary Elections are conducted. Then Jeremy Gruber, the Senior Vice President at Open Primaries, a national election reform organization spoke to us about the trend occurring across many Southern states to push for closing the Primary Elections. Gruber is a lawyer, writer, and public policy advocate and has helped pass over 60 state and federal laws. He has previously worked for the American Civil Liberties Union and several other civil rights organizations. Gruber is the author of three books and dozens of articles and is regularly featured in the media. He received his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from St. John's University School of Law and a B.A. in Politics from Brandeis University.
