An important lesson to realism is to avoid hard lines. Shading transitions are part of the basics of drawing life as realistically as possible. You want to take your shading from dark to light and light to dark usually by way of gradual transitions rather than a drastic change. Drastic changes often results in a drawing that is too contrast and thus will often look two dimensional rather than what you want, a more three dimensional appearance.

Another important element is to make the details life correct. Avoid rushing a drawing by avoiding the details. This is especially true with fabric and clothing, where you often have patterns. Rather that rough shade in the patterns, attempt to duplicate the actual pattern of the original.
