Yes, moving left and right is very important and so is moving back and forth.
And you can move even better by understanding different zones because if you understand this, you can correct yourself by saying "Oh, I need to be here to make this shot" when you make a mistake.
Making smooth connection on the ball requires good movement back and forth because the shots will vary in spin and speed(length). And working on this footwork will improve your game!
Zone 1 - push (drop)/ push (long) / flick
Zone 2 - loop for backspin / serve / counterloop / (chop) block
Zone 3 - loop / bloc / counterloop
Zone 4 - loop vs loop / chop
Zone 5 - chop / lob
