(11 Oct 2020) Citizens in Vienna cast their votes Sunday to elect the mayor of the Austrian capital.
Polls see the incumbent mayor Michael Ludwig of the Social Democratic Party of Austria in the lead.
Ludwig was the only candidate to vote in-person to demonstrate that the election is safe despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The former vice-chancellor and right-wing Freedom Party of Austria strongman Heinz-Christian Strache is also trying to make a comeback but pollsters said his chances of making it into parliament are slim.
Two German newspapers published footage in 2019 of Strache apparently offering lucrative government contracts to a potential Russian benefactor during a meeting on the Spanish island of Ibiza in 2017.
Strache and party colleague Johann Gudenus were heard telling the woman that she can expect lucrative construction contracts if she buys an Austrian newspaper and supports the Freedom Party.
Strache subsequently resigned from all official posts and left his party.
