Nobody loves being manipulated, since it’s one of the lowest gestures a person can suffer. The problem is there are people out there who deserve a degree in manipulation for how good they are at doing it without their victims realising. In this video we’ll see 5 characteristics of manipulative people.
1. They constantly need your attention
One of the typical behaviours of a manipulative person is that they don’t respect your space, continually asking you for attention even at times which are clearly inconvenient for you. This behaviour often leads you to jump through hoops so as not to disappoint them. One of the strong points of a manipulative person is the ability to make you feel guilty, to make you feel like you’re never doing enough for them. Needless to say, this behaviour is very selfish. Try to identify when this happens, avoid being treated like a puppet, and if necessary be more selfish yourself.
2. They communicate indirectly
Manipulators are generally cowards and rarely tell you what they think of you directly. For them it’s important to protect their own image as a “good person” and they prefer to talk behind your back or, if necessary, use another person to give you bad news so to not expose themselves directly.
3. They play the victim
Manipulators are masters in playing the victim. They are true experts at behaving like small innocent defenceless creatures who were badly wounded by the words you said or the actions you’ve done. The result is that you often find yourself having to apologise to them when it’s not your fault, because of their inability to take responsibility for their own mistakes.
4. Their problems are real, yours are trivial
If you dare have a bad day and complain about your problems with a manipulative person, they will tend to minimise your problems by comparing your problems with theirs, which always appear to be much more important than yours. Their goal is to always be the centre of attention, and if this involves seeking your attention by constantly complaining, so be it!
5. They use emotional blackmail
What is emotional blackmail? Let’s take an example: if in a relationship a person threatens to hurt themselves if their partner leaves them, therefore leading the partner to feel almost obligated to stay with them to avoid this happening, this is emotional blackmail. This often leaves the person who undergoes the emotional blackmail in a difficult situation where they find themselves having to do something against their own will.
This type of behaviour can be very dangerous because it could then lead to worse consequences in the future, so it’s important to be careful if you find yourself in a similar situation.
The victims of this blackmail are often sensitive and possibly insecure people, the main targets for manipulators.
