In this video we present scientific evidence that supports the Biphasic Theory of Orthodontic Tooth Movement.
Research conducted at CTOR clearly shows that tooth movement occurs as a result of 2 clear stages that overlap to certain extent. The first stage is called Catabolic phase and occurs when cytokines are released in response to trauma, recruiting and activating osteoclasts in the PDL, which resorb the bone all around the moving tooth. The second stage, Anabolic phase, starts later, and occurs when osteoblasts are activated and start depositing bone to preserve the alveolar bone structure. An interesting aspect of this theory is the discovery that the Anabolic phase is dependent on the Catabolic phase. Indeed inhibition of ostoeclast recruitment and activation by anti-inflammatory medication prevents osteoblast activation and bone deposition.
