Short final Runway 5 at Cedar Key Florida. A bit of turbulence and wind, coupled with sluggish controls, kept you alert but nothing challenging for the Cherokee. As with any short field approach and landing:
1/ Compute your landing distance using the applicable density altitude and ensure sufficient room for error and other factors (I use 150% of computed landing distance).
2/ Select a point along the runway at which you will commit to a go around should the aircraft not be on the ground in the proper landing attitude.
3/ Establish and maintain a stabilized descent to touchdown. If the approach is not stabilized within a few hundred feet of the runway, go around. Stabilized means (1) On the proper glidepath and azimuth (2) On the desired speed (-0, +5), (3) Sink rate within limits (4) Airplane properly configured for landing.
4/ Fly your approach speed accurately so as to minimize floating in the flare. This is not the time to go for a "greaser" - a firmer touchdown on the mains at the desired point on centerline is far better than a smooth landing 2/3 down the runway.
You may notice that Runway 5 has been remarked and now sports a displaced threshold....could this runway get any shorter? I believe it already laid claim to being Florida's shortest paved public strip.
