To celebrate 50 years of Bangladesh’s independence, Bengal Foundation organised Srijone O Shekore, a 5-day arts festival, from 14 to 18 December 2021, at Bengal Shilpalay, Dhaka. Supported by BRAC Bank, the festival featured performing arts, visual art, crafts, books, film, readings, and events for children. Over 300 singers-musicians-dancers-craftspersons-artists performed on stage and engaged in various kinds of programming at the festival, over the five days.
A duet presentation of Raga Bageshree by Mirajul Jannat Sonia and Sushmita Debnath Suchi delighted audiences at Ganer Jhornatolay (Beneath the fountain of music), on the first day of the Srijone o Shekore festival. The artists were accompanied on the tabla by Parampara scholars Prashanta Bhowmick and in the harmonium by Avijit Kundu.
Sonia and Suchi are both senior students at Bengal Parampara Sangeetalay, training in Khayal under Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar. Sonia learned the fundamentals of music at an early age under Nasir Uddin and Ustad Rabiul Hussain, among others. Growing up in a musically inclined family, Suchi joined the Parampara programme when it was first launched in 2001. For a time, she also trained with Anup Barua and Asit De. Both Sonia and Suchi are competent in Nazrul Sangeet and have completed training from Chhayanaut Sangeet Bidyayatan.
Bengal Parampara Sangeetalay (BPS), a programme of the Bengal Foundation, opened its doors in November 2014 to deserving Bangladesh students, to offer free tuition in Indian classical music from internationally renowned teachers under a modern interpretation of the Guru-Shishwa parampara method. The aim is to revive interest in classical music and create the next generation of young masters who will ensure the propagation of an important musical legacy of the sub-continent.
Classes at BPS are held under the auspicious guidance of gurus Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar (Khayal), Pt. Suresh Talwalkar (Tabla), Pt. Tejendra Narayan Majumdar (Sarod), Pt. Kushal Das (Sitar), and Pt. Uday Bhawalkar (Dhrupad), and tutors Mr. Kaushik Mukherjee (Sarod), Mr Debasish Haldar (Esraj) and Mr. Kalyanjit Das (Sitar). The training is open-ended and expected to continue until such time the students achieve professional excellence. The programme has been lauded for its uniqueness, benevolence, and long-term commitment to excellence.
