(15 Jun 2017) Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams made a joke at the British government's expense when speaking outside Prime Minister Theresa May's residence at Downing Street on Thursday.
"You folks here make enough mess of your own elections, make enough mess of your own government, make enough mess of your own affairs" Adams said, in reference to May's Conservative Party losing its parliamentary majority in the recent election she herself called.
The Irish republican Sinn Fein party joined others active in Northern Ireland who attended talks with May as her government attempts to allay growing concerns that its expected supply and confidence deal with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) deal would undermine the Northern Irish peace process.
Adams maintained the party's traditional refusal to take its seats in the UK Parliament out of opposition to Westminster's jurisdiction in Northern Ireland and the oath all MPs must make to the Queen.
