What an album opener! From the tempo changes, to the odd chords, to the abstract lyrics, you can tell Mastodon were going in a bit of a different direction by fully embracing the progressive direction they experimented with on "Blood Mountain." I would probably count "Leviathan" as my favorite Mastodon album (you may have noticed it's one of the framed album arts on my wall back there), but "Crack the Skye" is definitely up there.
The alternate picking riff is actually the most difficult part of the song, in my opinion, but it isn't too bad once you get in the rhythm (both literally and figuratively). Also, I will readily admit that I have no idea what is going on during the fast part of the solo. It's super quiet in the mix, so I decided to wing it. Hopefully I got somewhat close.
