New Zealanders were amongst the first in the world to celebrate the arrival of 2020 with a fireworks display that erupted from Auckland's 328-meter tall Sky Tower Wednesday, January 1.

Thousands of revelers on the waterfront watched brightly colored fireworks and laser lighting shooting into the night sky over the city's harbor.

According to local broadcaster TVNZ, the Sky Tower lit up with 3,500 effects and required two tons of equipment and 14 kilometers of cabling.

A light show on the Auckland Harbor Bridge also burst into life to accompany the fireworks display. (REUTERS)
