STORYLINE:

A number of local residents were returning to fire-ravaged areas in and around the San Bernardino Mountains, east of Los Angeles, on Monday.

Fires in the area killed 20 people, destroyed more than 3,400 homes and burned about 750,000 acres across Southern California over the past week.

Residents of Claremont, just west of San Bernardino, were among those who've been returning to view the damage to their homes.

The Red Cross and local authorities have also been in the areas to aid people left homeless by the fires.

Firefighters have been aided in their battle against the flames by wet, cool weather that moved in late last week.

Authorities plan to send as many as 3,000 firefighters home from several sites in the region, as the threat diminishes.
