Gallbladder disease affects millions of people in the United States. Those who suffer from severe gall bladder problems often experience pain and discomfort and in many cases have to have their gall bladder removed. A doctor at Fremont Health is the first in the Metro to use a new surgical procedure to remove the organ.
With the help of the da Vinci Surgical System, Dr. Jake Wiesen removes the gallbladder through a single, small incision in the belly button. Most procedures use three to four visible incisions.
"It's an incision that you almost can't even see - so the biggest benefit at this point is very much a cosmetic benefit having one incision instead of four. There's probably some pain benefit to that as well," explained Dr. Wiesen.
In this Health Check, WOWT's Serese Cole goes into the operating room at Fremont Health to see how this new procedure works. She'll also introduce you to the first patient who had the procedure done at Fremont Health.
