Power producer KENGEN has struck 375 megawatts of geothermal energy from its steam wells in the Olkaria fields. The discovery is a major boost to the country’s drive to boost energy supply to 5,000 megawatts by 2017. According to KENGEN, the wells will be used to develop three power plants with a total capacity of 350 megawatts. Since 2014, KENGEN has commissioned over 280 megawatts of energy mainly from its geothermal projects. This has lifted the country’s total installed capacity to 2,200 megawatts. KENGEN has already hired consultants for the project and is in the process of selecting contractors with negotiations for funding progressing well with development partners.
