China’s People’s Liberation Army Eastern Theatre Command released footage of joint military exercises in the Taiwan Strait on August 26, 2022. The latest video came after a fourth US visit to Taiwan in August, this time led by Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn. During her meeting with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, she called the self-ruled island an “independent country”. Mainland China regards the island as a renegade province to be reunited by force if necessary. The mainland has warned against official ties with Taiwan, which most countries do not recognise as a sovereign state. The US says it abides by the one-China policy, but opposes moves to take Taiwan by force.
