In this video, Dr. Ashley Marcus, MD, injects a patient’s knee with a “gel substance” called Hymovis using ultrasound guidance.
Hymovis is a recently FDA-approved therapy, which is a thick gel-like solution that acts like a lubricant and shock absorber in the knee joint. For many patients, Hymovis injections provide up to 6 months or more of relief from knee pain due to osteoarthritis. OA osteoarthritis is a common condition that causes joints to become stiff and painful.
Prior to the injection, she checks to see if the patient’s knee is swollen with fluid, and withdraws any excess synovial fluid. Synovial fluid is the joint fluid normally found in the knee, which is produced in excess when the knee is inflamed and is typically painful.
