6 Reasons You Might Not Survive Living in Bellingham, Washington (Watch Before Moving!) Are you thinking about making Bellingham, Washington, your new home? Before you start packing, take a moment to truly consider what living here entails. Bellingham is known for its stunning natural beauty and close-knit community, but not everyone finds it to be the perfect paradise it appears to be. In today's video, we'll discuss the six reasons you might not survive living in Bellingham, Washington.
Here are six reasons why Bellingham might not be the right fit for you:
1. Weather Woes - Bellingham has a mild climate year-round, but it comes with relentless rain and gray skies. Winters (December to February) have low temperatures between 34-37°F, highs of 44-47°F, and about five inches of rain monthly. Snow is rare but possible. Spring brings highs in the mid-50s to low-60s and about three inches of rain per month. Summers are pleasant, with temperatures from the mid-60s to upper 70s and minimal rainfall. Fall sees temperatures drop and rain return, averaging four to five inches per month. Despite an annual rainfall of about 39 inches, the persistent drizzle and gray skies can be a downer, especially if you crave sunshine.
2. Job Market Limitations - Bellingham has a growing economy, but its job market is limited compared to major metropolitan areas. With an unemployment rate of around 4%, similar to the national average, job opportunities are fewer.
3. Public Transportation Challenges - If you're used to seamless public transit in a major city, Bellingham's public transportation might disappoint. The Whatcom Transit Authority (WTA) offers bus services with 30 to 60-minute intervals, far less frequent and extensive than systems like San Francisco's BART. Most residents rely on personal vehicles, unlike city living, where public transit is the norm.
4. Limited Arts and Entertainment - Bellingham has a vibrant music scene, with notable bands like Death Cab for Cutie and ODESZA hailing from here. However, compared to cultural hubs like Seattle or Vancouver, Bellingham's arts and entertainment options are sparse. Professional sports are nonexistent, and while there are some semi-pro teams and local music venues, they don't compare to the bustling scenes of larger cities.
5. Earthquake Concerns - Bellingham sits near the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a major fault line capable of producing massive earthquakes. The potential for an 8.0 to 9.0 magnitude quake is a looming concern. Other fault lines, like the Seattle and Devil's Mountain Fault, add to the risk.
6. High Cost of Living - Bellingham's cost of living is about 23% higher than the national average and 5% above the state average. Housing costs are especially steep, around 40% above the national average. While utilities are cheaper, expenses like food, healthcare, and transportation are significantly higher. Depending on your current location, Bellingham's cost of living might be prohibitive.
Despite these challenges, many find Bellingham's charm irresistible. If these six reasons haven't swayed you, then perhaps Bellingham truly is the place for you. Watch the FULL video to learn more!
