Our experts test the 2023 Volkswagen Golf GTI, to see if the first hot hatch is still the best practical sporty car to buy with your cash.
The Volkswagen Golf GTI still uses a 2.0-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder engine producing 180kW of power (241 hp) and 370Nm of torque. In Australia you can only buy the Golf GTI with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch DSG automatic. No manual is available anymore. It is FWD only but has a variety of optional extras.
Later in 2023 a further update to the Golf GTI will arrive with a centre airbag and some minor trim changes inside. Later still, we expect Volkswagen to facelift the Mk 8 Golf with some physical buttons for climate control and other common functions to address a key buyer complaint with the new-gen GTI.
The Golf GTI competes with the Hyundai i30 N, Cupra Leon, Toyota GR Corolla and other hot hatches.
