(3 Oct 1994) Hutu prisoners held by the Rwandan government in Kigali claim that
they've been tortured by their captors and that at least three
have been shot and killed. The 3,000 prisoners being held in
crowded conditions in the Kigali prison say they have been
receiving inadequate food and medical supplies and that several of
them have died from dysentry. Displaying wounds, some claim they
were beated and hit with machetes before being interned.
Government troops controlling the prison denied the accusations.
A UNHCR report says 30,000 returning Hutus have been
killed. But Rwandan Prime Minister Faustin Twagiramungu denies the
claim, dismissing the report as "baseless". More than 30,000
people packed the Kigali stadium for the rally of troops
displaying military hardware.
