1992 - Highlights of the tournament
A judgment from the Paris administrative court in February stops work to extend the grounds, and with the stadium area being reduced, there is a slight drop in attendance with 327,095 spectators for the fortnight.
For the first time since computerised rankings were introduced, the two world Nos.1, Jim Courier and Monica Seles, defending champions to boot, take the titles in Paris. Courier drops just one set in seven matches to become the eighth player since 1925 to win two in a row.
Monica Seles meanwhile is the first player in 55 years to win three women’s singles titles in a row, with this one coming after a titanic struggle in the final against Steffi Graf, as was the case two years previously. The match becomes the second longest final in terms of games (35), after Margaret Court needed 36 to beat Chris Evert in 1973. Germany’s Steffi Graf has now lost three finals in four years.
Enjoy!
