This very remote semi-ghost town is located in one of the hottest places in the country--painfully hot to visit in summer. Even though settling there was far from ideal, there were those who could see a lucrative opportunity to provide a domestic source of mineral that was essential for household use. Getting the mineral to transportation hubs was another story in itself with the ghost operation located just a few miles to the north of town--definitely a must see with wagon and remnants of the operation on display. Wagons weighing many tons pulled by several mule teams forged through the relentless heat to locations miles away, and the mule teams became an iconic brand name for the mineral sold as borax. If you visit Death Valley Junction, you can get a triple feature for your time there by visiting the borax operation site just to the north of town near Furnace Creek, then head east just a few more miles to visit the mysterious geologic wonder of Devils Hole, where the water reacts to earthquakes on the other side of the earth, and the depth of the water is still unknown.
