This is quite a sad story and was quite hard to read. Over to Russia where eleven orcas and 87 belugas languish in several rectangular sea pens in Srednyaya Bay in Russia's the Far East. They have been caught in the wild and placed in these icy pens until they shipped off to aquariums around the world. Aerial footage of these pens went viral last year with many media outlets labeling it the Whale Jail.
Now an investigation has kick-started into the alleged illegal capture of these animals and the connections to aquariums in China. The animals themselves are in poor health, in late January a team of marine mammal researchers and veterinarians visited the site to assess the health of the orcas and belugas.
