This episode we are installing our two-seater bench seat and mounting a Webasto 2000STC gasoline heater. Both of these installations required us to lower the van’s gas tank, so we tackled them concurrently. We ran into a lot of roadblocks - missing mounting hardware, ruining drill bits, and having a difficult time positioning the seat and heater correctly.
Because of rainy weather our Webasto install didn’t receive a lot of film time- write us a comment if you’d like more information about that portion of the installation.

Seat installation process:
1) Krysta found seats and brackets from a 2019 Ford Transit Passenger van and bought them. We chose the 31" 2-person passenger seat.
2) I went to a metal shop and had four 3/8" Cold Steel Brackets fabricated.
3) We used the "sit in the seat, and eye-ball the position in the van" technique to figure out where to place the seats.
4) We looked under the van to confirm the location wouldn't conflict with the sub-structure of the frame - I used the cross nut that hold the factory floor as a reference when I was under the van.
5) We drilled pilot holes, and then slowly enlarged them with larger drill bits.
6) We placed the cold-steel brackets under the van, and used a permanent marker to mark the bolt hole locations.
7) We drilled bolt holes into the brackets with a drill press.
8) We fitted the seat using Grade-8 automotive 1/2" bolts with crush washer and loc-tite.
9) We sat in our newly installed seats!
What we learned during this install
1) When drilling through steel plates it is really important to use the right tools! We had to drill through 3/8” cold-rolled steel plates to make our under-seat brackets. Hand drills simply weren’t cutting it! We needed to purchase metal cutting drill bits and drilling oil and then use a drill press to finally make our holes. Also, patience was so important – set your drill to a slow speed.
2) It was difficult to purchase the correct bolt sizes until the holes in the floor were made – but to drill the holes in the van required the gas tank to be dropped. This was a real catch-22! At certain stages of the van build it is important to have access to a second-vehicle – or be really good at planning ahead!
