As much as movies and television would have us believe otherwise, it was very rare for two gun fighters to face off on a dusty street in the distance. This romanticized image of an Old West shootout originated in the great novels of the late 1800s and has survived into the film age to such an extent that this fictionalized version is what immediately comes to mind when we hear the word "shootout." In fact, the "real" gunfights of the Old West were rarely so "civilized".
In fact, there are several misnomers for these "romanticized" shootouts, the first of which is that very rarely combatants "planned" a shootout while "challenging" their enemy to a duel in the street. Instead, most of those many fights took place in the heat of the moment when anger flared, and mostly with a small bottle of courage. Nor did they appear at 75 feet, where each shooter fired one shot, one fell dead to the ground, and the other stood as a "hero" in front of dozens of assembled spectators.
Instead, these fights were usually up close and personal, with multiple shots fired from handguns, often resulting in innocent bystanders being hit by stray bullets. Most of the time, it would be hard to tell who "won" even a few minutes of gunfire, as black gunpowder smoke from the pistols cleared the air.
That doesn't mean it never happened, like in the movies. One of the rare cases is the Bill Hickok-David Tutt Shootout in Springfield, Missouri. Even then it wasn't a "planned" incident, it happened when Wild Bill ran into Tutt on the street and hurt him.
They are always presented boldly side by side in popular westerns; in reality, opponents more often seek cover. The fights were not usually "clean" either, as the combatants drank and, without the usual light shots, fired until they emptied their pistols.
Those marksmen with a reputation as expert marksmen were usually reluctant to compare their skills with another gunner of the same caliber. Instead, they tend to avoid confrontation and excessive risk whenever possible.
