Intimacy anorexia is the act of withholding emotionally, spiritually, and sexually from your significant other, making them feel alone and disconnected. The pain and even trauma they experience from this are real due to you withholding your heart from them. The 12 Steps of the recovery process has helped millions of people over the years, both the addict and their spouse, and it can help you as well. In this video, Dr. Doug Weiss, licensed psychologist and national author, walks you through Step Two and its principles in moving forward.
As you walk the road of recovering from intimacy anorexia, it's important to remember that it's not instantaneous, it's a process. With Step Two, intimacy anorexic must come to believe in a power greater than ourselves to restore them to sanity.
Coming to believe in something isn't always easy. It wasn't easy for you to accept that you are an intimacy anorexic, withholding intimacy in several different ways from your partner. Knowing that you have an issue, that you caused them your spouse pain, and that you didn't always do good to them is hard to acknowledge. However, coming to believe that you are an intimacy anorexic, rather than just understanding what it is, allows you to take responsibility and actually take steps to change your life.
The majority of Step Two though, is coming to believe in a power greater than ourselves to restore us. This power, singular, is not a person, group, or any created thing you see. It's not a "higher power", it's a power greater than you and all that you see. Something that can help you change, it's greater than your issue. This power wants to restore you to sanity.
You can open your heart up to this power. Some of you don't have any spiritual training, while others do but haven't properly utilized it. This power can help you recover and stop withholding intimacy from your spouse.
