STORYLINE:
Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari led a large election rally in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, on Monday, exhorting the citizens to vote for his party for the development of the city.
The rally passed through various areas of the city with thousands of workers following his truck on foot.
The son of the late Benazir Bhutto, who was prime minister of Pakistan twice, said Karachi was his own city and he wanted to see the PPP succeed in every constituency.
“If you vote for Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and make it win all 20 seats of the city, I will ensure that the city is transformed in the next five years,” he said.
Pakistan is holding parliamentary elections this week but many voters are disillusioned and wonder if the balloting can bring any real change in a country mired in political feuding, a seemingly intractable economic crisis and resurgent militancy.
Forty-four political parties will compete on Thursday for a share of the 266 seats in the National Assembly, or the lower house of parliament, with an additional 70 seats reserved for women and minorities.
After the election, the new parliament will choose the country’s next prime minister.
If no party wins an outright majority, then the one with the biggest share of assembly seats can form a coalition government.
