Do you have previous coating on your pipe deck ? Is your pipe deck gray and needs to be cleaned and have that once beautiful color come back?
Let's discuss the process from beginning to end, including the best protection you can apply to the deck.
The first step is removing any previous coatings. Unfortunately, there is no easy, simple solution. Sanding is difficult and slow. Using a really nice sander and 60 grit sandpaper, I found it to take about 15 minutes to do a square ft. That is very slow. Perhaps a large orbital floor sander would have been better, but I only had 56 sq. ft. to remove.
My second method to strip the pipe deck was using a stripper by Penofin. The product I was removing was a hybrid product from Samsin. This product looked great when first applied, but it began to peal in a few areas after one year, creating an uneven appearance.
The Penofin Stripper sat on the deck for 30 minutes. I kept reapplying as needed to prevent it from drying. Keeping the pipe wet with a stripper is important. After lightly scrubbing the stripper into the pipe wood, I rinsed the product off with a garden hose.
The result was most of the product was softened but remained.
I ended scrapping all the remaining previous coatings off with a 5-in 1 tool. A paint scraper or a stiff putty knife will work just the same.
The best way to clean an ipe deck is to use a wood brightener. Wood brighteners use Oxilyd Acid, removing gray and evens the wood tone to give a more uniform appearance.
Once this was completed, the deck had 24 hours to dry before applying the Penofin Matt Finish Oil hybrid transparent stain.
I applied two finish coats and the deck looks great!
