Coach PJ Volker from the United States Naval Academy reviews some of his top block destruction drills that they utilize to help his linebackers evade blocking to make plays!
The drill covered in this short segment is called the “Scrape Spill Drill”, the drill is designed to put the movement skill, block destruction, and tackling all together in one drill. The drill utilizes a chute, a partner holding a hand shield, and a coach with a tackling wheel.
The player starts under the chute in a ready stance, low chest over knees ready to attack. The drill starts on the coach’s command. The player executes two lateral steps over mats while under the chute, the player will explode from under the chute and attack the defender with the hand shield, working to ensure proper hand placement and spilling the play. From there the player will finish the drill on the tackling wheel, working on finishing aggressively coming off the hand shield.
The drill helps the linebacker understand their placement on a pulling guard being able to make the place bounce outside of him to his support defenders. The linebacker is “inside out” on the blocker. The main objective you’d like to see for a game transition is that the linebacker takes on the inside guard of the blocker and still be able to make a play on the ball carrier.
Coach Volker does an amazing job breaking down the drill and providing game film to help drive home the key points of this drill. Implement this drill at the beginning of your individual sessions in practice and reap immediate gains from your linebackers.
