The Stick Your Labels Campaign aims to raise awareness of poverty issues to support people to be able to challenge the stigma of living in poverty in Scotland. We spoke to community activists about five common myths commonly used by the media.
Negative media reporting is detrimental to creating support for effective anti-poverty policy. It attaches huge stigma and shame to people living in poverty and results in an acceptance and normalisation of the discrimination of a group of people in society. There is an urgent need to tackle this stigma and challenge politicians when they use damaging language and also to confront journalists/editors when we see negative reporting.
The campaign calls on the public to actively challenge the negative language used by politicians and the media and to take action on stereotypes of people living in poverty.
