How do Civil Juries Differ from Criminal Juries?
Mr. James J. “J.J.” Uliano has served as a panelist at the New Jersey State Bar Association Annual Convention and has been a speaker on numerous occasions. In the video, he talks about the difference between a Civil and a Criminal Jury Trial.
Civil Jury trials are the central part of our system. Our founding fathers came up with a legal system where we have criminal and civil justice. Criminal justice would be when someone intentionally does something to harm you. Civil is when someone does not intend to harm you but has still may have some sort of act or omission which has led to your injury. For example, someone was texting while driving and ran a stop sign. They did not intend to hit your car, but they still did. This will put you in the civil system. A civil jury trial consists of six to seven jurors who need to reach a verdict of at least five to one, or six to one to hand down a civil verdict. It is different than what is portrayed in movies and tv, which shows the criminal justice system with twelve jurors.
