Square dancing is a unique socio-cultural phenomenon in China, especially popular among the middle-aged and elderly. However, with the booming short video and live streaming industry, an increasing number of young people are joining the square dancing troupe. People from all walks of life gather together after sundown to dance their hearts out, breaking a sweat under the city lights.
As its name suggests, square dancing is a dance performed in public squares. It often takes place in the few hours after sunset and has become an integral part of urban nightlife in China. For participants, it's not just a form of exercise, but also a social activity. It offers a platform where strangers can assemble, enjoy music, dance, and make new friends and neighbours. The types of square dances are numerous, some blending elements of modern pop music. In addition to squares, many parks, residential complexes, and other public spaces frequently host square dance activities.
Despite the popularity of square dancing in China, it has stirred up some controversies and issues, such as noise pollution and public space occupation. In response, many city governments have begun to implement regulations, such as limiting the hours and volume for square dancing.
This video was filmed in a square located in the Huaguoyuan Wetland Park, within the Huaguoyuan community of Guiyang - the capital city of Guizhou Province in Southwest China.
