Oregon Symphony Musical Director, Carlos Kalmar, and All Classical Portland on-air host Robert McBride discuss this weekend's concert, including Detlev Glanert's "Shoreless River," Henryk Wieniawski's "Concerton No. 2 in D minor for Violin and Orchestra," and Jean Sibelius' "Symphony No. 1 in E minor."
Carlos tells us much about "Shoreless River," Glanert and composers he considers comparable such as Alban Berg, Benjamin Britten, and Paul Hindemith, with a wonderful lyrical description of tonight's composition, which he says, "Comes over us, washes over us, then retreats...like water."
He speaks of Sibelius vs. the Vienna school, witty and insightful, and waxes eloquent about Oregon Symphony's Concertmaster, Sarah Kwak, soloist for tonight's Wieniawski Violin Concerto, "right hand of the composer, translating, phrasing," and generally being a superb leader for everybody on stage in this truly excellent orchestra.
