After planting direct in soil last year as an experiment, I went back to Ruth Stout only this year, for all of my potatoes. Sweet, White, and Red were all planted in a deep 12"+ layer of organic non-sprayed rye straw that we laid down while there was still snow on the ground. A very late frost nipped most of my sweet potato plants, but I re-planted some thanks for a friend. The white and reds, I really had high hopes for them this year. We've really come to LOVE canned ready to eat potatoes! Well, things didn't end up too well. The massive amount of rain we've been getting all summer long, really did a number on them. It also brought in a large infestation of ants, and mice - something I've never had to deal with before. I will not give up on this method though - I know it works, and it will be back again next year ♥
